Hi, my name is Jacob Martella.

Currently I work as a web developer at the UNT Health Science Center here in Fort Worth. And I also do freelance web development work as well.

I actually got my start in WordPress in the newsroom in high school. Our school paper made the switch to this platform called WordPress. And I got curious about how it worked. I ended up creating a blog for Arena Football and wanted to customize it and spent a summer learning web development and WordPress.

Fast-forward nearly a decade (wow has it been that long), and now web development is what I do.

I love the WordPress community, and I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing now without it. Actually, it was Jeff’s article in WP Tavern about one of my plugins that made me realize I might actually be able to do this for a living. I was also part of the organizing team for WordCamp DFW 2017 and 2018.

Anyway, I loved reading the Tavern and still do. I can’t wait to see what WP Mainline becomes.

That’s great. Welcome! It’s crazy how quickly time moves forward. So it looks like UNT Health Science Center uses WordPress. Were they using it before you worked with them? How has the organization taken to using it? Does any member of the non-technical staff manage content on it?

What kind of freelance work have you been able to do?

I joined on to the team in 2018 and they were already using WordPress. Not sure of the specific time frame, but I think they made the switch sometime around 2015, but don’t quote me on that.

I think everyone likes it, although we’re still using the classic editor for most of the sites. It’s a multisite installation, so there are a lot of non-technical users that maintain content, though they have to go through an application process and training.

For freelance work, right now it’s main been just subcontracting work with a family friend and doing customizations for sports plugin I built a few years ago. Still trying to figure out the marketing stuff (fun times for an introvert).
